Violent Tuesday

In two armed robberies in broad daylight, thieves made off with over RD$23 million and left one dead. The robbers killed the guard at the branch office of the National Savings and Loan Association on Mella Highway. They took over RD$1.0 million in cash. The same afternoon a well-organized group of heavily armed thieves robbed money changer Juan Omar Romero’s house in western Santo Domingo’s Las Palmas residential area.

In this case, the thieves got in excess of RD$22 million in Dominican currency, US dollars and Euros. In the first raid, the robbers entered the bank and shot the guard outright, took the money and returned to a waiting car. In the second raid, the thieves blocked off access to the street, using police uniforms and Kevlar vests, and were heavily armed. In both cases, sources at the National Police headquarters told reporters from Listin Diario and Hoy that they had good leads.
