Making the most of DR-CAFTA

According to the Economy and Interior Minister of the autonomous regional government of Cantabria, Spain, Angel Aguado, the DR-CAFTA treaty could turn the Dominican Republic into a strategic partner for businesses wanting to enter the US market. For this reason, Aguado believes that the DR offers an interesting business opportunity, making the Spaniards want to invest here. According to a report in Hoy newspaper, Aguado is leading a delegation of 30 Spanish businessmen who are visiting the DR to establish business contacts with local companies. Areas which could be of interest to these businessmen are technology, information, knowledge, construction (housing, roads, civil works), hotels and tourism. An agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Labor to train Dominicans who are willing to work in Cantabria. According to the Minister, Dominicans have a good reputation and an existing tradition of working in the tourist sector as well as its people’s personal characteristics of friendliness and courtesy. Port activities are another area of interest to the Spaniards. Aguado is accompanied by the Industry, Labor and Technological Development Counselor, Miguel Angel Pesquera; the Secretary General of Foreign Trade and Internalization of the Cantabria Chamber of Commerce, Antonio Mazarrasa; the Secretary General of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations, Miguel Angel Castanedo, and the Dominican Ambassador to Spain, Alejandro Gonzalez Pons.
