The United States Consulate in the Dominican Republic has reported that 5,550 Dominicans are serving time in US prisons for several felonies, most for drug trafficking. According to El Caribe, the report was delivered to the Attorney General’s Department by Consul Clyde Bishop, stating that state prisons in New York have 2,195 inmates, in Massachussets 323, New Jersey 282, Puerto Rico 145 and Florida 127. Federal prisons have 2,458 Dominican inmates for major crimes. Although the information did not include the type of crime, it is known that most Dominicans have been arrested on drug charges.
