* The case against a former Police chief and 34 other high-ranking officials re-opens tomorrow. This is the case involving the illegal use of stolen vehicles that had been recovered by the police, but then assigned to generals and other high ranked officers.
* In Bonao, Margarito Jesus Adames died after receiving ten gunshot wounds to his lower limbs during a shootout with the Police in the Palmarito barrio. Adames was wanted by the Police for having committed over one hundred rapes in the areas of La Vega, Cotui, Santiago, Moca and Bonao. He threatened his victims with death if they would not consent to having sexual relations. Adames had escaped from Cotui jail, and together with several others, was accused of belonging to a gang that committed robberies, assaults, and other attacks in the area.
* Police chief Bernardo de Jesus Santana Paez ordered the arrest of the policemen on duty in the San Luis police station last Sunday when Wilfredo Jose Garcia apparently hung himself in his cell. The alleged suicide is being investigated by a commission set up by general Santana. Garcia, 18, was found hanging in his detention cell after being arrested in the El Naranjo batey by two members of the Air Force A-2 (Intelligence) division.
* Two men were killed and a third wounded as they fled in a car-jacked SUV, which had been stolen just moments earlier. The SUV was taken from a regional manager for Colgate-Palmolive at 2:30am yesterday morning. Jimenez Gonzalez and Esmerdi Sanchez, residents of Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo, died in the exchange of fire with the Police. The third member of the gang was wounded. His name was not revealed to the press. As reported by El Caribe, the three men appeared at Ruth Pichardo Camilo’s house at 2:30 in the morning, threatened her with weapons and demanded the keys to her car. As the thieves fled, Pichardo called the Police and the car was stopped at the entrance to the Leche Rica plant on the highway to Santo Domingo.
