Deputy Pelegrin Castillo is warning that the Caribbean Sea is again being used for the transportation of radioactive material en route to Japan, which could lead to a dangerous situation in the event of any accident. The legislator, who was interviewed on Cadena de Noticias (CDN), said that a ship carrying 160 containers of plutonium passed through the Panama Canal between Friday and Saturday. Caribbean countries have protested in the past because some industrialized nations use the area for the transportation of radioactive materials. According to Castillo, this latest case is of particular concern because the DR was not warned. He stated that when radioactive material is being moved, countries near the route should be warned as “there is always the danger of a nuclear accident”. He said he was going to request an official protest from the government.
