Spanish ambassador summoned

After being summoned by Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, who objected to the manner in which Spanish Ambassador to the DR Almudena Mazarraza complained publicly about the lack of legal security and the unfavorable climate this creates for investors, the ambassador refused to give details of her meeting with the minister. Diario Libre reports that Mazarraza arrived at the ministry at 2 pm. She made her comments last Wednesday, upsetting Minister Morales Troncoso because according to him, this sort of complaint from a foreign diplomat should be made through official channels. After the meeting, the minister briefly stated that the ambassador had admitted that she should not have made her statement in public. Later on yesterday, Ambassador Mazarraza met with President Fernandez and representatives of “Elsamet”, a Spanish company that is interested in investing in the DR.

Listin Diario reports that the ambassador met with the President for over two hours, after which the diplomat stated that relations between Spain and the DR were strong and referred to Fernandez as a “respectful and kind” man. She specified that her meeting with the President had nothing to do with her complaints.
