Acting under pressure from many sectors, both public and private, spokespersons for the major political parties have suggested that they would support a review and revision of the code. Earlier, several Catholic bishops had asked for such a review in the face of the evident rise in crime that has been seen over the most recent months. Gernan Castro Garcia (PRSC-La Altagracia), Cesar Augusto Matias (PRD-Valverde) and Vicente Castillo (PRD- Peravia) call for a certain caution in reviewing the Penal Code, legislation that took years to reach passage in the Congress. The representative from Valverde said that a review was certainly possible if it was to better the application of the law.
