Dozens of tourists from Germany, Canada and other countries were trapped for a few hours on Cayo Arena (called Paradise Isle by tour operators) in the Punta Rucia region last Friday. They were safely removed by boats to La Isabela, and nobody was injured in the least. The community leaders of Estero Hondo and Punta Rucia were protesting the lack of anything that could be called a road between the main highway in Villa Elisa and the towns of Papayo, Punta Rucia and Estero Hondo. Neighboring towns, such as La Guajaca, Dona Antonia and Hatillo Palma joined in the protest demonstrations that saw traffic cut off for several hours. The protestors want the government to rebuild the dirt track that is 24 kilometers between Estero Hondo and La Isabela as well as the 24 kilometers between Villa Elisa and Punta Rucia. Both roads were impassable during the protest, with ditches keeping vehicular traffic stalled for many hours.
