More than 158,000 students were left idle, with the indefinite teaching strike called by the state university professors’ federation. The Federacion de Asociaciones de Profesores de la Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo is demanding a 30% wage increase. UASD professors are by far the best-paid university professors in the country, and have the best benefits plan. UASD Rector Roberto Reyna has said that he refuses to sit down to negotiate with the professors if they do not go back to work.
