Haitian migration

Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso openly said yesterday that his department seeks to control illegal Haitian immigration. He told reporters from El Caribe, that as soon as newly elected president Rene Preval is sworn in, the Bilateral Dominican-Haitian Commission will meet and the DR will discuss the issue. Morales spoke at the weekly meeting of Multimedios del Caribe in Santo Domingo. He said that besides the question of the large number of illegal or undocumented Haitians living in the Dominican Republic, the commission would also take up questions on frontier security, investments, security and environmental problems. Morales rejected the accusations made by some of the NGOs concerned with the welfare of the immigrants, saying that while there were serious NGOs, there were also “charlatans” that only spoke out to justify the money they received. Morales said that the rights of the Haitians were being respected by the authorities, although he admitted that in some towns there were incidents such as has happened in other countries. When he was asked about the bi-lateral commission’s lack of activity, Morales said that on behalf of the Haitian part of the commission things would change once newly elected Rene Preval was sworn in.
