The striking UASD (Autonomous University of Santo Domingo) professors and employees unions have accepted an offer from the university authorities and the government amounting to a 10% wage increase in May and 20% in January 2007. Other non-specified benefits were added on, such as a 50% increase in per diems and travel expenses for traveling professors, an extra RD$3.5 million contribution to the medical plan, confirmation of temporary professors, and promotion of employees. A commission was also appointed to review the university’s finances in order to find ways of reducing spending, and the creation of a technical planning commission to prepare a plan for the strategic sustainable development of the university, which they aim to complete in four months. The professors and employees agreed to return to their work. The 27-day strike affected the state university and threatened to do away with the summer session. The UASD announced the reopening of classes for its 150,000 students today.
