Dominicans win Billboard Latin Music Awards

Dominican performers Andy Andy, Aventura and Luny Tunes won Billboard Latin Music Awards at the event finale. The ceremony took place on 27 April at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida and aired on Telemundo.

The producer of the year award went to the reggaeton production team of Luny Tunes, the first time a reggaeton producer nabs that honor. Luny Tunes produced and wrote “Mayor Que Yo,” which also won the newly created reggaeton track of the year award. Billboard said that the 2006 awards sent a clear message that the Latin audience has accepted new sounds, from reggaeton to rock to progressive tropical music.

Andy Andy won awards in three categories. His “Que Ironia” (Wepa/Urban Box Office) won Tropical Album Of The Year, Male, Tropical Album Of The Year, New Artist and Tropical Airplay Song Of The Year, Male.

Aventura won the Tropical Album Of The Year, Duo Or Group for “God’s Project” (Premium Latin/Sony BMG Norte).

The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin music, determined by the actual sales and radio airplay data that informs Billboard’s weekly charts during a one-year period ending with the 5 February issue.
