Golfers play first Nicklaus course

Cap Cana opened the back nine holes of the Punta Espada golf course for play on Friday, 7 July, as part of the new Cap Cana tourist and real estate development on the east coast of the Dominican Republic. The back nine holes can be booked for play on weekends but advance reservations are necessary. The other nine holes are scheduled to open at the end of August or September.

Punta Espada is the first of three signature Jack Nicklaus golf courses to open in the 46 square mile Cap Cana development with 3.5 miles of virgin beaches in the Punta Cana area.

The back nine are located along a dramatic coastline where golfers can look out over the blue expanse of the ocean in search of inspiration to help them achieve their best level of play. The golf course features 100% Seashore Paspalum, the preferred grass in tropical climates because of its resistance to salt water and its vibrant green color.

“Cap Cana’s topography represented a challenge in design, but one we embraced,” says course designer Jack Nicklaus. “With the relationship Punta Espada enjoys with its natural surroundings – with almost half the holes playing to or along the coastline, and views of the Caribbean on all but a few holes–this is a stunning backdrop for golf,” Nicklaus said.

“We wanted to give Jack Nicklaus the perfect site to create a work of art; that’s why we didn’t think twice about putting more than 7,000 yards of land at his disposal so he could let his imagination and creativity soar,” said Ricardo Hazoury, president of Cap Cana.
