Tourism started out strong in 2007 with a growth of 5.5%. Diario Libre writes that over 89% of passengers who passed through the country’s airports were non-resident tourists. This January 375,933 non-resident tourists entered the DR, 19,686 more than in January 2006 when 356,247 non-resident tourists entered the country. Total arrivals in January were 420,915. Punta Cana continues to lead in tourist arrivals, with 52.8%, followed by Puerto Plata with 19%. Las Americas International (Santo Domingo) received 14% of arrivals, La Romana 8.9%. The smaller terminals of Cibao (Santiago), La Isabela (Santo Domingo) and El Catey (Samana) received the additional 5%.
