Air arrivals (non-resident foreigners) to the DR during the first quarter of the year totaled 1,161,583 tourists, which is 4% (44,624) more passengers compared to January-March 2006. Most arrivals landed at Punta Cana (52.2%), followed by Puerto Plata (18.78%), Las Americas (14.81%) and La Romana (8.11%) airports. Smaller airports Cibao (Santiago), La Isabela (Santo Domingo) and El Catey (Samana) received 6.10% combined. This first quarter, most tourists came from Canada, with 28.46% of all arrivals, followed closely by the US with 27.64%, France with 11.01%, Germany with 6.30%, Spain with 5.21%, Italy with 4.49% and the UK with 3.87%. The US market declined by 3%, partly due to bad weather that led to flight cancellations, as well as the new passport obligation for US travelers.
