Dominicans at Grammy Awards

This year the Dominican Republic shines at the 8th Latin Grammy Awards. Several performers have been nominated for awards and songwriter and singer Juan Luis Guerra is to be honored as Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year at a tribute dinner and subsequent bash at the Pure Nightclub in Caesar?s Palace, sponsored by Johnny Walker whisky and Rolling Stone Magazine on 7 November. Subsequently, on Thursday, 8 November, 10 Dominicans will vie for Latin Grammy Awards, with Juan Luis Guerra himself standing for five nominations. The nominations recognize established and emerging artists and highlight creative collaborations. Guerra is one of the most internationally famous Latin music stars of all time. He is known across the world for his infectious fusion-laced renditions of merengue and bachata. Over the course of 25 years he has sold nearly 15 million albums and played to packed stadiums around the world.

Other Dominican nominations are for Kinito Mendez (“Con sabor a mi”, Best Merengue Album), Tono Rosario (“A tu gusto”, Best Merengue Album), Aventura (“K.O.B. Live”, Best Contemporary Tropical Album), and Michel Camilo (“Spain Again”, Michel Camilo & Tomatito and “Spirit of the Moment”, Best Latin Jazz Album).

The 8th Annual Latin Grammy Awards are being held on 8 November in Las Vegas, and will be broadcast live on Univision Network from 8 to 11pm ET.
