Fairmont stakes claim in Punta Cana

Toronto-based Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is joining Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Sotogrande, Westin, Maxim and other international brands that have discovered the Dominican Republic and are now marketing the destination to their clientele.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts formally announced construction of the 255-room Fairmont Roco Ki, the Fairmont Residences (condominiums, villas and estate homes), and Fairmont Heritage Place, a private residence club, due for completion by 2010.

In addition to Macao Beach, one of the Fairmont’s attractions will be the Nick Faldo-designed 18-hole championship golf course, which winds along the beach through a dense mangrove forest and stretches across the property’s headland with stunning cliff-top views of the turquoise sea.

“We are honored to have Fairmont join the Roco Ki community of distinctive residences,” said Nick Tawil, president and CEO of Roco Ki. “Fairmont’s extraordinary history as a premier hotelier with locations in culturally rich areas and Roco Ki’s commitment to its local heritage will continue to pave the way for luxury tourism development in the Dominican Republic.”

Chris Cahill, Fairmont’s President and COO, stated, “We look forward to working with Roco Ki to develop this community in Punta Cana, an area which promises exceptional experiences for our guests. Fairmont continues to be committed to global growth, and we are excited to expand our presence in the Caribbean with not only this hotel, but also residential offerings.”

Fairmont operates properties in 14 countries including Canada, the United States, Mexico, Bermuda, Barbados, United Kingdom, Monaco, Germany, Switzerland, Egypt, Kenya, Zanzibar (Tanzania), the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.

Fairmont is known in Canada for its famous historic hotels and resorts such as the Empress Hotel (Victoria) and Hotel Vancouver in British Columbia, the Royal York in Toronto, Banff Springs in Alberta and Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City.
