Once again, Cabarete is preparing to host several of the world’s top kiteboarders for the 25 June through 29 June Professional Kiteboard Riders Association Cabarete World Cup 2008. The PKRA event will take place at Bozo Beach, Cabarete in Puerto Plata. Prize money this year is US$40,000, and the entrance fee is US$105 for competitors who register by 22 June. Past champs of the Cabarete event are: Ariel Corniel, Kevin Langeree, Aaron Hadlow, Jaime Herraiz, Andre Phillip, David Tyburski and Martin Vari. In the women’s category: Bruna Kajiya, Kristin Boese, Cindy Mosey and Julie Gilert. The event is held in the World Cup Freestyle discipline and in Board Off Competition. Accommodations are at the Viva Wyndham Tangerine, Velero Beach Resort, Villa Taina, Cabarete Palm Beach Condos, among other facilities right on Cabarete Beach. The top 12 men and 6 women of the current PKRA Ranking have been pre-qualified.
The PKRA highlights that Cabarete is notable for its warm water and perfect kiteboarding locations. Remarkably, in the men’s division there has never been a repeat champion, proof of the high competitiveness of the event. Ariel Corniel became the first Dominican champion in 2007. The challenge is whether he will be the first to win twice.
