Cabarete, Puerto Plata is proving itself as a leading worldwide laser sailing destination. Two months into the Olympics, several of the finalists came to train. As of Sunday, 17 August, one week into the sailing competition, and with only one race left, the top three leading men in the Laser class and the top woman in the Laser Radial class were all Cabarete-trained. These were Paul Goodison (UK), Rasmus Myrgren (Sweden), Gustavo Lima (Portugal), and Anna Tunnicliffe (USA).
An amazing 19 different national teams competing in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in China came to Cabarete to train. Ari Barshi of Carib Bic Center in Cabarete explains why. “The wind and wave combination that Cabarete offers is very unique and challenging. The protected bay allows sailors to practice during storms, and the fact that in Cabarete all amenities are all within walking distance completes its attractiveness to teams and individuals from around the world,” he tells.
