In an interview with Listin Diario, Petra Cruz, director of the Dominican tourist office in the German city of Frankfurt, says that the Ministry of Tourism will be opening three new tourist offices this year. She was interviewed while attending the ITB tourism fair. One office will open in Prague to oversee the Eastern European markets and another will open in Stockholm, covering the Scandinavian market. A third will open in Moscow, to expand the current representation and oversee the Russian Federation markets. The DR already has tourist offices in London, Paris, Madrid, Milan and Brussels. Cruz says the DR is the leading destination for European tourists in the Caribbean. “Growth will come from emerging markets and in the consolidated markets we have to develop market niches and high purchasing power segments such as golf, meetings, weddings and adventure sports. Cruz said that the European market makes up 40% of travel to the DR. She says that it is also an all-year-round tourism, without the peaks that come with other markets. She added that Europeans traveled in winter and in summer, and that the average stay was longer.
