La Vega to be tourist hub

The Minister of Tourism says that the city of La Vega will become a prime destination for historical and cultural tourism through the “La Vega Action Plan 2010” designed to restore the main tourist attractions of the old city of La Vega, which was founded by the Spanish colonizers. Francisco Javier Garcia announced the plan during a meeting with the leading municipal and provincial authorities, church leaders and tourism ministry staff. Garcia said that the plan includes the Cathedral Museum, the restoration of the Museum of Medicine, the construction of a research and tourist information center, the repair and restoration of Old La Vega and signposting the pilgrimage trail, “The Route of Faith”.

La Vega is also well known for its outstanding carnival celebrations. Every Sunday in February, thousands of local and foreign tourists travel to the centrally-located city to marvel at the lively carnival characters known as “diablos cojuelos” and their pranks as they parade down city streets.
