National Business Council (CONEP) president Lisandro Macarrulla stated yesterday that the international organizations helping Haiti should grant high priority to the productive sector and then to the Dominican private sector in order to guarantee the development of both nations over time. Macarrulla spoke during a meeting between the Dominican business sector and Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive. The CONEP leader said: “There are many experiences where the massive influx of aid has weakened and bankrupted local enterprises. When we speak of local enterprises we include ourselves together with the Haitians.”
He stated that the only way to obtain a long-term development plan was to support the productive sector in each country.
Macarrulla said that the development of Haiti needed to go hand in hand with that of the Dominican Republic due to geographical, social and economic reasons.
The meeting was organized by the Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD) and was attended by the executive director of the Center for Exports and Investment, Eddy Martinez and the Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, Juan Guiliani Cury.
