Is Figueroa Agosto in Puerto Rico?

In his column in today’s Listin Diario, Orlando Gil asks why the Dominican authorities maintain the campaign offering a RD$5 million each rewards for tips that would lead to the capture of Jose Figueroa Agosto and accomplice Sobeida Felix Morel “when they have evidence and witnesses that indicate that the fugitives are in Puerto Rico?”

Gil says that one of the assistant prosecutors working on the case says he saw the couple shopping in a well-known store that sells designer shoes, watches and handbags. The columnist writes that the man even took a photo of them with his cell phone so there would not be any doubts.

Gil speculates that Figueroa Agosto should feel at home in his native Puerto Rico. “He is not hiding, as one is being led to believe, but living with all the luxury that comes with his wealth.”

Gil says that a local delegation of prosecutors and police had met with Puerto Rican officers who are familiar with the case and are certain to have brought back promises. But he speculates that when it comes to finding people, the US agencies are not the best. “One cannot forget that criminals slip through their fingers and the wanted lists can fill enough pages to make books,” he writes. Figueroa Agosto is a fugitive from justice in Puerto Rico, after escaping from jail where he was serving a 209-year sentence.
