The Ministry of Public Health has announced a national campaign of vaccination for dogs and cats that they hope will reach at least 1.5 million animals. The campaign is aimed at reducing the incidence of rabies in the Dominican Republic.
The program, which will start in the third week of March, covers the whole country and costs RD$23 million.
A special emphasis will placed be on the areas where the greatest number of rabies cases has been recorded, to reinforce campaigns of recent months.
The vaccine was procured in Brazil and is part of the Extended Immunization Program being implemented by the National Anti-Rabies Center.
Rabies is usually found in dogs, cats and mongoose in the Dominican Republic, and the bite of a rabid animal will cause death in humans if it remains untreated for more than a week.
