According to the Dominican Hydroelectric Generator Enterprise (EGEHID), the Valdesia and Jiguey reservoirs have enough water to supply Santo Domingo province and the National District as soon as inter-institutional agreements on the use of water are put into place.
EGEHID director Victor Ventura said that during the first and second meetings between the water and electric sectors, it was agreed that Valdesia would use 5m3 per second in order to satisfy the demand for irrigation water on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and that the Hydroelectric facility at Valdesia would go offline on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of last week.
However, because of the near-nationwide power cut that occurred last Tuesday, they had to interrupt the program and use Valdesia and Tavera to reboot the entire electricity system.
Ventura also said that the leaks in the floodgates of the Counter-dam at Las Barias would be fixed. These were damaged in the floods during tropical storms Noel and Olga in 2007.
