US fugitive turns himself in

Faustino Maximo Perozo Vargas, sought for his alleged involvement in the Quirino case (Case 04CR1353) being heard in a New York City court, has turned himself in. District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso said the Supreme Court of Justice would process his extradition. Perozo has been a fugitive from justice since 2005, when the Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant, following an extradition request received from the US. In the DR, the government has confiscated Cabana Extasis located in San Isidro, a shopping center at Avenida Venezuela and several other properties belonging to Perozo.

Former Dominican army captain Ernesto Quirino Paulino Castillo was arrested on 18 December 2004 for his involvement in the attempted shipment of 1,387 kilos of cocaine to the US. He is accused of sending more than 30 tons of cocaine to the US, to which he later confessed to US judiciary.

Perozo turned himself in voluntarily to the district attorney Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, accompanied by his lawyer Nestor Victorino, saying he was innocent of all charges.

The Supreme Court had authorized his extradition on 14 June 2005.
