The Malecon, the sea-fronting boulevard, has been included as one of the 7 Treasures of the Material Cultural Heritage of Santo Domingo. The International Bureau of Capitals of
Culture announced the winners last week. There were 27 candidates for the treasure, and most were in the Colonial City. The emblematic Caribbean boulevard that dates back to 1936 is the setting for many cultural events in Santo Domingo carnival. Many important architectural buildings line the Malecon, dating back from Colonial times to the start of modern architecture in the country.
