Child mortality up

1,253 babies have died this year in public hospitals, according to government records. El Dia reports that as of June, deaths were reported for 740 babies 0-7 days, 260 babies 7-28 days and 253 babies 28 days-11 months. The main causes of death were bacterial sepsis with 30.2%, breathing difficulties with 28.5%, septicemia 29.2% and pneumonia 13.4%. 72% of the deaths occurred in five public hospitals: Robert Reid Cabral (18.3%), San Lorenzo de Los Mina (17%), Arturo Grullon (13.5%), Jose Maria Cabral y Baez (12%) and Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia (11.3%).
