Master of the Cordillera

Jarabacoa, in the Cordillera Central mountain range, will be hosting some of the toughest athletes in the DR for the Master of the Cordillera extreme sport event. The competition includes a 20-km mountain biking trek, 2 kms of canyoning (down Baiguate River), a 10-km hike up to El Mogote and 5 kms of trekking through open fields, 8 kms of rafting, 8 kms tubing, and a final 600-meter run. The winner of the event should take from 10-12 hours to complete the grueling requirements. Event organizer Luis Franco says it is a benefit for the Special Olympics. Teams can be male or female only or mixed. There will be competitive and recreational categories. The winner of the competitive category will receive a cash prize of RD$60,000, second place RD$30,000 and third place RD$15,000. The organizers are also responsible for the Master of the Jungle and Master of the Desert events. Registration is RD$2,000.
