The playoffs in the east

For the first time in the history of Dominican winter baseball, the playoffs will be played in the southeastern cities of La Romana and San Pedro de Macoris. The Estrellas Orientales won the right to dispute the Toros of La Romana in a final game they won 3-0 on Monday evening against the Gigantes del Cibao from San Francisco de Macoris.

The media has named the playoffs, “The Sugar Cane Series” relative to the sugar-cane producing region of the east.

This is the first time ever that the playoffs are being played away from Santo Domingo, since both the capital city’s teams were eliminated early on. La Romana and San Pedro fans are very supportive of their teams, promising an exciting 9-5 playoffs games as the teams have but a half-hour commute between each other. This will be the fourth time that the Toros have made it to the playoffs. They won the Dominican championship for the first time in 1994-95 season. The Estrellas won the championship in 1954 and 1968, and it has been 11 years since they were last in a playoff.
