Professor Charles Beeker, director of the Academic Diving and Underwater Science at Indiana University Bloomington and Dr. Jeffrey Patchen, president & CEO of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, will present the amazing story of Captain Kidd’s shipwreck and the archaeological research that has been taking place off the southeast coast of the DR as part of National Geographic’s Treasures of the Earth Expeditions. The lecture will take place on Thursday, 8 March at the Regional Museum of Archaeology, Altos de Chavon, La Romana, at 6pm.
The wreckage of the Quedagh Merchant, left behind by the 17th century pirate as he rushed to defend his reputation in New York, was found by a Casa de Campo resident only 10 feet below our warm waters and 70 feet off the coast of Catalina Island. The archaeological research has been conducted in cooperation with the Oficina Nacional De Patrimonio Cultural Subacuatico – the National Underwater Cultural Heritage Office.
Professor Beeker is a member of the Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee – NOAA. He has directed numerous shipwreck projects in the United States and the Caribbean and is a pioneer in preserving wreck sites as underwater museums. He will also discuss research on other sites throughout the Dominican Republic, including the Lost Fleet of Columbus, Henry Morgan’s Flagship HMS Oxford, the Spanish Merchant Nuestra Senora de Begona, the slave ship Le Marquis de Galliffet, and on prehistoric life and the population of the Caribbean.
This lecture is hosted by Muffi and Jimmy James and Casa de Campo.
