Northwest tourism gets a boost

President Leonel Fernandez recently inaugurated the reconstruction of the Dajabon-Montecristi road, making it easier for Dominicans and foreign tourists to visit the tourist attractions of Cap-Haitien (La Citadelle) in northern Haiti by land. The new road connections also serve visitors to the northwestern beach city of Montecristi. Montecristi is one of the lesser known destinations in the Dominican Republic, but its authentic feel and excursions to see mangroves, coral reefs and outlying islands make it worth a visit. In the city itself, the main attractions are the Maximo Gomez museum, for an insight into the close historic ties between the DR and Cuba, and the public clock built by the same engineering company as the Eiffel Tower. Gastronomy is a highlight with fresh seafood and exquisite roasted or stewed goat at roadside stops, especially in Villa Lobo on the road from Montecristi to Navarrete. The highway has become known as “the goat route”.
