President Leonel Fernandez decorated Dr. David A. Lanning with the order of Christopher Columbus at the Presidential Palace yesterday. Dr. Lanning directed a team of 20 physicians who successfully separated cojoined twins Maria Teresa and Teresa Maria Tapia Sanatis at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System on 7 November 2011. The twins at the time were 18 months old. They were joined at the torax and abdomen. The twins attended the ceremony with their parents, Marino Tapia and Lisania Sanatis.
