Dominicans in Spain send 1% of National Budget

A recent study on Dominican immigrants in Spain, “Diagnostic of Dominican Immigration” by university professor Yris Rossi reveals that there are 141,220 Dominican immigrants in Spain of whom 62% are women and 38% are men. Of the total, 52,712 have also taken Spanish nationality.

The study reveals that 55,554 Dominicans live in Madrid alone, of whom 59% are women and 41% are men.

She said that on the positive side for Spain, Dominican immigration has brought more young people to the country.

She said that most Dominicans celebrate 21 January, the Day of Our Lady of Altagracia. She told Listin Diario that most people who have migrated have done so in search of economic improvement.

She said Dominicans abroad needed to work on improving the image that Dominicans have in Spain, where they are perceived as being frequently involved in crime. She suggested telling the media more about the merits and accomplishments of Dominicans, which make up the majority.

She advocates the signing of a study agreement between the ministries of education in both countries to train Dominican teachers who have migrated to Madrid and Spaniards to work with migrant Dominicans.
