Cut 50% party allocation and no new taxes needed

Deputy Victor (Ito) Bisono (PRSC-National District) says that cutting 50% of the resources the state provides to political parties and abolishing the so-called social assistance funds provided to legislators for distribution at their discretion, would eliminate any need for an increase in taxes. He also said that if the Central Electoral Board (JCE) retained RD$350 million of the RD$700 million annual allocation to the political parties, this would make a big difference, as reported in El Caribe.

He estimated that if the senators gave up the patronage money in the “little barrel” and the deputies their own in the “treasure chest” this would represent a further RD$350 million a year in savings. Bisono said that lawmakers could gain the respect and esteem of Dominican society by renouncing these perks.

Furthermore, Senator Julio Cesar Valentin has proposed reducing Congress to one house to cut costs.
