Medina to regulate state pensions

President Danilo Medina has instructed his Presidency Minister Gustavo Montalvo to draw up legislation aimed at regulating pensions throughout the government bureaucracy. Solange Batista from Hoy says that Jose Ramon Peralta, the Administrative Minister for the Presidency told her that Montalvo had received instructions from Medina a week ago. This news comes after a spate of huge pensions was revealed following the admission of Haivanhoe Ng Cortinas that he was going to receive RD$651,000 a month for serving as the Superintendent of Banks for a few months.

In an interview with El Caribe, the superintendent of Pensions, Joaquin Geronimo admitted to privileges in government pensions received by high-ranking officials in Congress, the Judicial Branch, the Central Electoral Board (JCE), the state UASD university, Central Bank, Superintendence of Banks, Banco de Reservas, the Armed Forces, Police, decentralized government organizations, and several other government entities.

Meanwhile, aging sugar cane cutters announced they will protest in front of Congress today to request the approval of their pension plans. They are asking for RD$5,117 each. Spokesmen for the workers will meet with the social assistance commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
