The days of excellent telecom service are past

In the good old days, the US multinational Verizon owned Codetel and Dominicans boasted about having excellent telecom service.

El Dia reports today, Monday 8 October that the Dominican Republic can no longer boast of having good mobile service. Users complain that calls that do not go through, calls they do not receive, and communication that gets cut off are now common in the Dominican Republic.

But Claro and Orange denied any problems with their service, as reported in El Dia.

Yina Morales went on record with El Dia complaining about what too many fellow telecom customers are suffering in the DR: “Often when I dial a number I have to try it several times, because I get a message saying: error in the call, or there are no channels available.” Marilyn Dominguez said that she has to move around to find an adequate signal. “It gets worse inside buildings and many non-central locations,” she said.

An official at the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) says that the overexpansion has created problems and there is saturation of lines. He said that in July 9,959,823 lines were in use, almost one per inhabitant. Of that total, 8,897,310 are mobiles and 1,032,558 fixed lines.

He also mentioned there has been rapid growth in the use of the Internet. In May 2011 878,345 Internet accounts had been assigned in the country and by July 2012 the number of accounts had reached 1,721,814.
