CDEEE tender suspended

The Tender Commission of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) has announced the suspension of the tender in which six companies pre-qualified to give the new authorities time to study relevant processes for the installation of up to 1,000 megawatts of generation.

As reported in El Dia, the project will involve an investment of US$3 billion to be financed by foreign development banks or multilateral organizations.

The decision to interrupt the ongoing tender process was adopted on 28 September and announced to the bidders on 1 October. Companies that had prequalified in April 2012 were Emce Caribbean, Inkia Energy Limited, EGE Haina, Korea East, West Power Company and CE La Altagracia. Other companies that were authorized to complete documentation were Odebrecht, Consorcio Norenco (Inversiones Iemca, Pan-American Grain Manufacturing and Summit Power Group), Alstom Panama, FCC Construction (Andrade Gutierrez, CI Grodco and Grodco Panama).

During a visit to Brazil in July 2012, President Danilo Medina announced that progress had been made in talks for the installation of 1,000 to 1,500 megawatts and that Brazilian companies would be awarded the contracts. In a press release issued from the Medina press service there was talk of the installation of two plants of 300 megawatts each, which caused concern among the bidders in the tender.
