Kate Dilson of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) has announced from Washington that it has donated US$2 billion to Haiti and US$70 million to the Dominican Republic to fight the cholera epidemic in Hispaniola.
So far cholera in the two countries has caused the deaths of 7,000 people according to official figures, although it has now slowed to six deaths a week, reportedly as a result of improved public education and water and sanitation.
There have been 26,000 cases in the Dominican Republic, including the recent outbreak in Tamboril, and more than 350 deaths.
Dr. Florence Guillaume and Freddy Hidalgo Nunez, the Ministers of Health for Haiti and the Dominican Republic are working together on the program to eliminate cholera on the whole island.
