A poll taken the day before President Danilo Medina released his proposal to increase taxes by RD$55 billion, the new president’s popularity was at an all-time high. A NewsLink poll for the Cuentas Claras radio talk program showed that President Medina had an 85% approval rate for his first 45 days in government. The most popular measures were austerity and the creation of the literacy plan.
The poll showed that 47.4% graded his start of government as positive, and 37.7% as very positive for an 85% rating. The poll was carried out on 2-3 October.
On 4 October, President Danilo Medina released the bad news that he needed lots of money to pay for the inherited fiscal deficit.
Some 1,031 people responded to the survey that has a margin of error of 3.05%. Of those surveyed, 20.6% identified themselves as members of the opposition PRD and 53% as members of the PLD.
58.7% of Dominicans polled believed great improvements were coming, and 23.6% expected the government to continue with achievements as in the first month. In other words, 82.3% were optimistic about better times ahead for the country under the Medina government.
