World Bank economist blames politics for electricity deficit

The chief economist of the World Bank for Latin America and the Caribbean, Augusto de la Torre says that the root of the problem in the Dominican electricity sector is more related to politics than to technical issues. As reported in Listin Diario, De la Torre said that everyone in the DR knows the problem well and understands its nature even more than multilateral organizations like the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank. He observed that almost everyone in the DR has a private individual solution to blackouts, when a real solution needs to be collective. De la Torre said that everyone knows that most of the population does not pay for the service and the few that do pay lots and a solution has to be found to that.
