Baseball returns to the DR

The 2012-2013 Dominican Winter Baseball League (Lidom) is now officially under way, although not without some typical setbacks. The tournament got off to an official start in San Francisco de Macoris, with the Minister of Sports, Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal, throwing out the first ball. This year’s tournament is dedicated to sportsman Jose Hazim from San Pedro de Macoris. Unfortunately for the fans, the games in San Francisco and San Pedro de Macoris were stalled for some 20 to 30 minutes because of power outages, a familiar situation for the local population. According to all the newspaper reports, the public is ready to play ball! Attendance at all of the stadiums was full and the teams responded with good performances.

In SFM, Chris Coghlan of the Aguilas Cibaenas hit a homerun, a double and a single to lead his team to a 9-5 victory over the hometown Gigantes in the Julian Javier Stadium. Coghlan also scored two runs and batted in three more. Pitcher Lorenzo Barcelo worked five scoreless innings for the Aguilas, although he left without a decision. For the Gigantes Marcel Ozuna hit a homerun and two doubles and Matt Clark and Leury Garcia both hit homers, along with Moises Sierra.

In San Pedro de Macoris, an Alex Valdez single with the bases full in the ninth inning gave the Estrellas a 2-1 victory over the Toros del Este. In Santo Domingo, at the venerable Estadio Quisqueya, the Tigres del Licey scored three runs in the ninth inning, capped by a suicide bunt by Pablo Ozuna to take a 7-6 victory from the Leones del Escogido.
