Odebrecht says highway is not stalled

The Odebrecht Construction Company says that the reconstruction and improvement of the highway between Piedra Blanca and the Ocoa Crossroad is not stalled. The company announced that due to budgetary constraints they are carrying out an engineering study and that they will prioritize the construction of the bridge between Ocoa and Sabana Larga. According to Odebrecht executive Flavio Campos, the company is currently negotiating with the Ministry of Public Works in order to work within the Ministry’s parameters. He recalled that the project includes at least 17 bridges and a huge volume of earth movement in order to prevent landslides in the mountainous region.

The announcement was made after over the weekend the press reported that the Ministry of Public Works had ordered a halt to construction work on the South Cibao highway considering that the US$300 million price tag of the highway is too much, and ordered a restructuring of the construction. Hoy reported the Ministry of Public Works is considering carrying out the highway with its own engineering corps.
