Yesterday, Monday 15 October, several street vendors in the Colonial Zone complained that they have been left out of the government programs to re-launch tourism in the area. These programs involve an investment of RD$200 million and a US$30 million loan from the Inter-American Development bank (IDB).
The president of the Association of Street Vendors in the Colonial Zone, Modesto Milano said that it was an outrage that his members had been excluded from the plans and what was worse was they were not just having their wares taking away, but also their money; they were being beaten and arrested, taken to court and given a police record as if they were criminals.
He complained that they had not been included in any of the meetings and Mayor Roberto Salcedo had said that they would be made to leave.
