New policy to fight crime and violence

Yesterday, Monday 15 October, the Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito, announced the implementation of a nationwide plan called “Co-existence” or “Convivencia” as part of government policy to fight crime.

He made the announcement during a meeting with municipal authorities, legislators, police, neighborhood groups and various associations in Barahona and said it was part of the government plan, now under President Danilo Medina, to redesign policies to fight crime in the country.

He went on to say that the President would present the project to the country once everything was in place and he asked everyone to help by participating in meetings and being an active part of its development and execution.

Dominguez Brito said that the plan would help with stability and the development of communities, reduce violence and would contain elements that would combat domestic violence, murder, drug trafficking, illegal weapons, robberies and assaults.

In its initial phase, the plan will identify the reasons for the increase in violence and crime in each province, and design a plan for reducing these problems based on its findings. He also said that they would stop recurrent offenders leaving jail too easily.
