Cardinal says middle class has enough burdens

Metropolitan Archbishop Nicolas de Jesus Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez indicated yesterday, Tuesday 16 October, that the middle class is not in any condition to be asked to make more sacrifices. He suggested instead that the more economically solvent n business owners n should accept a temporary quota. The prelate was referring to the fiscal reform as proposed by the government, which includes taxing savings. On this point, he said that if people have struggled and saved in order to have a better quality of life, “I believe that they should get the recognition that they deserve.” He said that “it is not the same for someone who has RD$500 million as for someone with RD$1 million. The example is in the fact that you have to measure the scope of the legislative measure.” In response to questions about the excesses in public spending, he said that the government should look into making some cutbacks in the highest posts.
