Educa concerned over use of 4%

The president and vice-president of the Action for Education group (Educa), Elena Viyella de Paliza and Franklin Baez Brugal, have expressed concerns about the way that the Ministry of Education plans to use the more than RD$90 billion pesos that the 4% of GDP will provide the ministry. Interviewed during the weekly luncheon event at Multimedios del Caribe, the education campaigners said that one of the Ministry of Education’s main problems, along with several others, is the handling of funds and their capacity to manage such a large amount of money. Baez Brugal noted that the Ministry already has plans for the use of much of this money, already announced to the public, such as building more schools. He noted that such a huge construction project needed to be strictly supervised so that the accustomed “overages” and “over pricing” do not occur. They also pushed for improved teacher training courses, since “if you don’t know, you can’t teach”.
