Ex-Senator’s death may not be suicide

Forensic tests have cast doubt on the initial theory that the death of the former senator for El Seibo, Gerardo Aquino Alvarez was suicide.

Police spokesman Diego Pesqueira said the investigation is still open, but that the case had been assumed to be a suicide following discussions with witnesses. He added however that the Police said at the time that they had to wait for the report from the National Institute of Forensic Science (Inacif).

The forensic report has revealed that Aquino Alvarez died as a result of two gun shots to the head, rather than only one as first stated by the police, and pathologist Sergio Sarita Valdez said that he has never seen a suicide case with two shots to the head. In addition the gun was found on the left side of the victim’s lap and according to Valdez, when one shoots oneself with the right hand, to the right side of the head, the weapon usually falls to the right. He said that he has never seen a case like this one.
