According to the Social Indicators System (SISDOM) issued by the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPYD), the illiteracy rate among Dominicans over the age of 15 has decreased gradually to from 12.7% to 9.9% since 2000. The data is contained in a study by Katherine Then, a social researcher at the Dominican Policy Observatory (OPD) Public Policy Unit. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) also confirmed the findings.
Then said that the literacy program proposed by President Danilo Medina could meet the challenge of eradicating illiteracy by 2015. “Quisqueya Learns With You” is due to start at the beginning of 2013 and aims to teach 700,000 Dominicans to read and write within two years.
