President Medina revisits national airline idea

President Danilo Medina is considering the possibility of the Dominican government investing in a national airline. This follows on from a failed multi-million-dollar initiative that was launched when Felix Jimenez was Minister of Tourism.

Medina made the announcement after a meeting at the Presidential Palace with Spanish businessman Juan Jose Hidalgo, owner of Globalia that operates the airline Air Europa. The Dominican ambassador in Spain, Cesar Medina, was also present.

After the meeting Hidalgo said that he was delighted the President had decided to re-launch this project and he had no doubt that within four years he would reach his objective of doubling the number of tourists visiting the country. However, he said that this would be impossible to achieve without a national airline guaranteeing the interests of the state in meeting this challenge.

Medina was informed about the process of creating a national Dominican airline that would begin by flying daily to New York and Miami, where most Dominicans living in the United States are concentrated.
